Abstract

The purpose of the study was to develop and evaluate the integrative play therapy for older people who have early dementia symptoms. The integrative play therapy was not only developed based on the various approaches to treat dementia, but also overcome the limited effectiveness of individual programs. This program consisted of several programs from diverse areas such as music, art, language, literature, game, physical education, life, and traditional play. The play therapists who have finished the play therapy education program were participated in this program as a program provider. One group pre-post test design was adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Program participants were selected based on the MMSE-K results indicating suspected early dementia. Results based on the data of 39 older adults showed that the proposed program was effective to improve cognitive function and lower depression symptoms for older people who have early dementia symptoms. However, there is no effectiveness for improving inter-personal relationship. Further discussions and future research implications were provided in this paper.
